INJURIES AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT

Wello (Short for Well hello there)

A lot of friends, colleagues  sponsors and or donators have asked me about my injuries and my health.

Well, just as in the previous post about "what you put in, is what you get out" can also be applied to health management and or injuries.

Firstly I have to express my sincere gratitude to those people who have helped me thus far, without your professional input and advice, I would never be able to run 26 miles let alone 160.

INJURIES:

Do I have injuries... Hell yes, is the answer, and plenty of them, however none that are limb threatening or of the 'now' hindrance except for my shoulder.

  • Currently sitting with 'arthritics' (I am only young, I know 28 again and next year too) in both shoulders, however the right shoulder is not only sitting with an impingement, but with the shoulder joint displaced as well as blistered and with a hole carved out in the upper clavicle bone, the bone has now an extra three calcification nodules which are tearing into the 'supraspinatus' as well as blistering of the clavicle.  I a due to have a shoulder replacement when I have come back from my Ultra Marathon.  Do I have pain..................... are rather when don't I have pain; however its managed with physio and exercise.  It is sadly an old swimming injury that has flared up over time and has got really bad.  Does it affect my training, a little, especially as I am training with my back pack, however  keeping the shoulders back and stretching is helping in the temporary recovery process.  I am not an advocate for medicinal drugs, however I am due to have a cortisone injection next week to tie me over until I my return.

  • Right knee,  torn meniscal cartilage, damaged joint surface cartilage, torn anterior cruciate ligament with years of hockey, tennis, and general sports injuries my knee took a turn for the worst back in 1991, upon where I had the knee cap repair and replacement cartilage surgery.  (the stories I can tell about those physio sessions, and how I would be a grumpy old fart, and or so strong willed that I would walk home were my then husband not to fetch me on time, I have been know to walk with plastered leg on crutches for at least 20 miles, whether that is anger or determination, is anyone's guess).    The pain is gone, HOWEVER it has never ever been the same since, despite strength building and  physio it still causes discomfort when running, however strapping and kinesiology taping, as well as acupuncture and Nancy, have helped me recover more in the last year than in the last 20 years. A continued strength building programme to my level, is what Ben has designed into my training programme.

  • Right ankle, ummmm just before I was due to go skiing in the new year of 2009, I slipped and fell on my local high street, twisting the ankle into a rather wonderful position which was unknown to my body of 40+ years.  Needless to say, I left my trekking boots firmly on and proceeded for the rest of the day, pretending nothing had happened.  The boot had somewhat acted as a re-enforcement and it actually healed really well, until 2 weeks latter, when I came crashing down a ice covered mounting side in skies in Pomporovo, Bulgaria.  If one could have heard me swear it would look something like this... !"£@{)^%$£"$%^:)(*^!"£$%%^&***.  Although the ankle joint took a hammering and blistering of the bone became the name of the game, it has healed well, however it has never been the same since.  Again strapping and strength training have all helped me recover and maintain the best level of fitness that's possible.

Thank heavens all of my injuries are manageable and oddly enough all on my right side :)

HEALTH MANAGEMENT:

As I live with a few conditions: and manage them well, life is just normal for me and training fits into the daily routine as if I were an normal as the next person.

  • I inject Clexane and or Heparin on a daily basis so as to prevent a thrombosis, as I life with Thrombophilia. Foods can have an impact  - see posting on Food.
  • I have non diabetic Hypoglycaemia, which is where certain foods can and do trigger an attack and my blood sugar drops extremely low.
  • Lupus - Systemic lupus erythematosus - Its very mild however it does affect me from time to time, and it is just managed with life, what I put in is what I get out.....
I am, apart from these conditions and injuries healthy both in mind, body and also emotion.  Having an active and determined life style imparts a positive and engaging lifestyle.

If can train, plan and prepare for an Ultra Marathon so can anyone else, it is simply #MINDSET  #DETERMINATION and a willingness to make a #DIFFERENCE to your life.

Before embarking on any training regime and or training plan or challenge, please seek advice from you Doctor first.

WHAT YOU GET OUT IS WHAT YOU PUT IN / WHAT YOU PUT IN IS WHAT YOU GET OUT

Wello lovely People of the World
& to those In Alaska, USA, "Europe", Southern Africa, The British Isles, Ukraine, Poland and Southern America and of course Germany.

I awoke this morning feeling like I had been driven over by a million tonne truck, however receiving positive emails about my fund raising figure has given me the will to lift the million tonne truck with just my little pinkie finger.

A lot of friends, colleagues and acquaintances have asked how do I fit it all in and how do I achieve what I do.  There is no secret and or magic wand, but rather I use the following mantra,

"When feeling overwhelmed and or on the verge of collapse or feel like giving up, and the entire word is against me, I do the following:

(I get up and have a piece of chocolate - "I have the ability to walk, use my mouth, taste, sense and swallow" - I have a fully functioning mouth and senses.

I then wash my hair - "I have the ability to walk to the bathroom, use my hands and arms and I have a head full of hair, I use my senses to smell the shampoo, and the sense to know when my hair is clean" - I have fully functioning limbs and senses, plus I can see the outcome in the mirror.

I then put on a pot of coffee, - "I again use my limbs to grab the pot and coffee" - I have coffee, I have water and I have the heat source to produce a cup of coffee.  - I again have a fully functioning body, mind and senses.)

I then go to the toilet,  - "I again use my limbs to walk, I can use by body to cleanse its self, my brain and senses work together telling me that I indeed need to use the toilet".

THAT SHOULD CLEAR UP THE QUESTIONING ON HOW I CARRY ON WITH LIFE -
I HAVE MY LIFE WHILST OTHERS DO NOT HAVE THESE PHYSICAL OR COGNITIVE ABILITIES LET ALONE THE HOME OR NORMAL COMFORTS - THAT MY PEOPLE IS MY MANTRA.

"THE WORLD DOES NOT OWE ME A LIVING, RATHER I OWE THE UNIVERSE GRATITUDE FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE MY LIFE TO THE FULLEST - JHW"

I could have got up this morning, proceeded to have chocolate pops, Nutella smothered bread and a hot chocolate, but as in the great saying, what you put in is what you will get out. There are moments when chocolate pops help, and in small amounts, but what nutritional benefit will I get? One could argue that its not just about nutrition, but what about emotional well being... well the argument is both valid and does work, however where did we as a nation or as a world go wrong? When did we have to validate ourselves to eating shite or when did we have to rely on shite to make us feel good? When did we have to validate ourselves through friends or work or education, as part of my ongoing study and research I have come to see a gap, a gap in health and well being, as well as mental and emotional well being. Emotional Intelligence needs to be measured in terms of how we see ourselves.  Its that term 'Psychosocial' that needs more prevalence in the input/output world we live in.

Its all about subliminal and subconscious processing and of course it tastes good, it stimulates the senses.  So lets just eat chocolate pops...... but were I to eat chocolate pop every time I felt insecure or down or crappy, I would feel good for 20 minutes and then hit the sack feeling even more shite.

This is indeed the same with everything in life, what we put in is what we ultimately get out.

There are however 3 factors to consider when putting in and getting out
1) The things we can control
2) The things we can't control
3) The things we have no control over

By applying those 3 factors, your in put and out put will therefore be in equilibrium.  BUT I hear people offering that old age excuse "TIME" and "CIRCUMSTANCE" we all have priorities, and circumstances and 'lack of time', however what ever happened to pro-activity and planning??

I have and can make all the excuses in the world right now, not to type this blog as my son is having a kick off,  I have to do Uni research, I have washing to pack away, I need to make some food, as hungry again, I 'need' and want to go and watch a movie plus I have training session coming up....Friends ask me where do I find the time.  I have plenty of time, that the truth, if we all just plan and do a little everyday then we can lead a full life.  People ask me where do I get the energy from, unsure, I guess its what I put in that I have an equal energy balance?

However I don't always get it right or don't always prioritise correctly, it cold depend on mood, emotion, being physically tired or have had enough for the day, e.g. yesterday I had plenty on my plate, and managed to send off emails and application forms, look after a sick child and still make Uni Labs, however I put off an filling in application because I needed space to clear my head and finding the correct words.  That ONE shot approach, however why did I put it off for so long? The truth is I did send it off last night, however what I failed to note was the cut of deadline of 5pm; my application went off at 10:46pm.  Although I got a response, and a response saying it was one of the best applications they have had in a long time, the cut of period was indeed 5pm, somewhere at the back of my mind I knew this, but ignored it anyway... perhaps, in all reality and truth, I did not really want to take on this role, nor want the responsibility, but when for it anyway.  Am I disappointed in myself, hell yes, but I probably knew that by taking on another role I would indeed cause unnecessary  stress.  The direct result or outcome was in due correlation to the amount of desire I use to input it.

It is the same with anything we do, be it work, study, home, business, training, eating and sleeping and health and emotional well being.

In today's modern society we all to often use the 'Blame Game' - why because its easy, but blaming circumstance and or environment and or people is no excuse at all because CHOICE IS WHAT YOU HAVE AS A MEANS TO LIVE, LOVE AND ACHIEVE.  All of you are at any time capable of doing what you really desire or want to achieve or accomplish.  In the great words of the late Nelson Mandela "IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL ITS DONE".

Ask yourself, what do I want, what do I feel and what can I do to Change, however before you make the CHOICE, are you willing to put in exactly what you are wanting to achieve???

Nothing is easy and noting is free, I am working my imperfect derriere off to highlight the charity causes, raise funds and to get the word out about my sponsors.  If I want to be successful, and want to raise a certain amount of money, I cant simply sit back and hope, I live in the reality of now, and use the now to move forward.

Plan, Act, Do, and Revisit.  Your desired outcome needs to be in direct relation to the required amount of input, be it in
                                           SLEEP
                                           FOOD/NUTRITION
                                           EMOTION/MENTAL APPROACH
                                           HOME
                                           FAMILY
                                           MINDSET
                                           EDUCATION
                                           TRAINING
                                           SOCIAL/CHARITY
                                           WORK
                                           FUN

Do I have weak moments....... of course, do I put more in and less comes out, most definitely... how is this possible one can ask, 'tis easy really, we can achieve and aim and do and train and and and and and and, however what you will most definitely get out is a weak, destroyed mind and body.

Do I do this, yes sometimes, well most times, I work around my child who has a neuro disability, but I work hard at keeping this input/output balance, and if trying and working hard means I am getting there then so be it.

Does this mean I am training to much, or not enough, it depends on ones #MINDSET, #ABILITY, #PHYSICALHEALT' #EMOTIONAL HEALTH and most of all, #DETERMINATION.  Just like using that old cliché, 'the rose' its in direct balance of smell, fragrance, sunshine, warmth, colour, size to death, snow, cold, rest, recuperation.

In the great words of #PauloCoelho -
"The reward of our work is not what we get, but what we become"

Go out and try, even if you fail and don't get it right the 1st or 100th time, just keep trying until you are able to feel that you are who you are meant to be.  Put in place those 3 Control factors,
There are however 3 factors to consider when putting in and getting out
1) The things we can control
2) The things we can't control
3) The things we have no control over

Please do all have a day where you put in what you want to get out.  I am off to do some research, emails and training and most importantly hug my son.

Blessings and #blisterfreewishes
