INJURIES AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT

Wello (Short for Well hello there)

A lot of friends, colleagues  sponsors and or donators have asked me about my injuries and my health.

Well, just as in the previous post about "what you put in, is what you get out" can also be applied to health management and or injuries.

Firstly I have to express my sincere gratitude to those people who have helped me thus far, without your professional input and advice, I would never be able to run 26 miles let alone 160.

INJURIES:

Do I have injuries... Hell yes, is the answer, and plenty of them, however none that are limb threatening or of the 'now' hindrance except for my shoulder.

  • Currently sitting with 'arthritics' (I am only young, I know 28 again and next year too) in both shoulders, however the right shoulder is not only sitting with an impingement, but with the shoulder joint displaced as well as blistered and with a hole carved out in the upper clavicle bone, the bone has now an extra three calcification nodules which are tearing into the 'supraspinatus' as well as blistering of the clavicle.  I a due to have a shoulder replacement when I have come back from my Ultra Marathon.  Do I have pain..................... are rather when don't I have pain; however its managed with physio and exercise.  It is sadly an old swimming injury that has flared up over time and has got really bad.  Does it affect my training, a little, especially as I am training with my back pack, however  keeping the shoulders back and stretching is helping in the temporary recovery process.  I am not an advocate for medicinal drugs, however I am due to have a cortisone injection next week to tie me over until I my return.

  • Right knee,  torn meniscal cartilage, damaged joint surface cartilage, torn anterior cruciate ligament with years of hockey, tennis, and general sports injuries my knee took a turn for the worst back in 1991, upon where I had the knee cap repair and replacement cartilage surgery.  (the stories I can tell about those physio sessions, and how I would be a grumpy old fart, and or so strong willed that I would walk home were my then husband not to fetch me on time, I have been know to walk with plastered leg on crutches for at least 20 miles, whether that is anger or determination, is anyone's guess).    The pain is gone, HOWEVER it has never ever been the same since, despite strength building and  physio it still causes discomfort when running, however strapping and kinesiology taping, as well as acupuncture and Nancy, have helped me recover more in the last year than in the last 20 years. A continued strength building programme to my level, is what Ben has designed into my training programme.

  • Right ankle, ummmm just before I was due to go skiing in the new year of 2009, I slipped and fell on my local high street, twisting the ankle into a rather wonderful position which was unknown to my body of 40+ years.  Needless to say, I left my trekking boots firmly on and proceeded for the rest of the day, pretending nothing had happened.  The boot had somewhat acted as a re-enforcement and it actually healed really well, until 2 weeks latter, when I came crashing down a ice covered mounting side in skies in Pomporovo, Bulgaria.  If one could have heard me swear it would look something like this... !"£@{)^%$£"$%^:)(*^!"£$%%^&***.  Although the ankle joint took a hammering and blistering of the bone became the name of the game, it has healed well, however it has never been the same since.  Again strapping and strength training have all helped me recover and maintain the best level of fitness that's possible.

Thank heavens all of my injuries are manageable and oddly enough all on my right side :)

HEALTH MANAGEMENT:

As I live with a few conditions: and manage them well, life is just normal for me and training fits into the daily routine as if I were an normal as the next person.

  • I inject Clexane and or Heparin on a daily basis so as to prevent a thrombosis, as I life with Thrombophilia. Foods can have an impact  - see posting on Food.
  • I have non diabetic Hypoglycaemia, which is where certain foods can and do trigger an attack and my blood sugar drops extremely low.
  • Lupus - Systemic lupus erythematosus - Its very mild however it does affect me from time to time, and it is just managed with life, what I put in is what I get out.....
I am, apart from these conditions and injuries healthy both in mind, body and also emotion.  Having an active and determined life style imparts a positive and engaging lifestyle.

If can train, plan and prepare for an Ultra Marathon so can anyone else, it is simply #MINDSET  #DETERMINATION and a willingness to make a #DIFFERENCE to your life.

Before embarking on any training regime and or training plan or challenge, please seek advice from you Doctor first.
